This episode made us think about our grandfather in a different way .Not as a medic on the front lines. Not as a soldier in one of history’s most famous campaigns. But as a young man waiting.
In Episode 3 of Snapshots of WWII, we follow Grandpa and the 357th Infantry Regiment Medical Detachment through the final weeks before D-Day. On paper, military records show little more than camp transfers, training exercises, and equipment inspections.
But the more we researched those records, the more we realized that something enormous was happening beneath the surface.
WAITING FOR SOMETHING THEY COULDN’T SEE
By the spring of 1944, Allied troops were moving across England in preparation for the invasion of Europe.
Grandpa’s unit moved from the Kidderminster area to Camp Sedbury and later to Racecourse Camp near Chepstow. To the men living it, these were likely just the next stops in a long series of military orders.
Today, we know they were much more than that.
These camps were part of the massive buildup to D-DaThe men didn’t know when they would leave. They didn’t know where they would land. They only knew that something was coming.
As sisters retracing Grandpa’s journey, we couldn’t help but wonder what those days felt like for him. Did he sense how close he was to history? Did he think about home? Did he worry about what lay ahead? Those are questions no military report can answer.
SEEING THE BIGGER PICTURE
One of the highlights of this episode was speaking with historian Paul Woodadge, whose knowledge of D-Day preparations helped bring these weeks into focus.
What initially looked like routine movements on paper suddenly became part of a much larger story. Thousands of Allied troops were quietly preparing for one of the most important operations of the war, and Grandpa was right there among them.
That realization hit us harder than we expected. Sometimes history isn’t found in dramatic moments. Sometimes it’s found in the waiting.
GETTING TO KNOW HIM
One of the unexpected gifts of this project has been getting to know our grandfather in ways we never could have while he was here. Every photograph, every military report, and every location helps us see him a little more clearly.
This episode reminded us that before he became a combat medic landing in Europe, he was simply a young man standing on the edge of the unknown. Trusting that he was ready.
The farther we travel down this road, the more human he becomes. And the more grateful we are that he left behind the photographs and stories that allow us to follow him all these years later.
CLOSING THOUGHT
The waiting is almost over.
Next week, Grandpa and the men of the 357th receive their orders and begin moving toward the coast. The moment they have been preparing for is finally at hand.
For us, knowing what comes next makes these quiet weeks feel even more emotional. Because we know history is about to change. And our grandfather is about to step directly into it.
With Love,
Jenne
